What to Look for in a Math Tutor

Math--the subject you either love or hate--can be a challenge for any student level. No matter your child's grade level, math tutoring helps them get a leg up on learning for the next learning phase. From one elementary grade to another, elementary school to middle school, or high school to college, a tutor provides the skills needed to succeed in mathematics.

Because math is a subject learned step-by-step, each lesson builds on the last. Understanding this, it's essential that your child does not fall behind and that you know when to call in a tutor.

Not all math tutors are alike. It's critical to find a tutor who not only understands the level your child is at but how your child learns best. Here are a few things to know while researching the right math tutor for your child.

Expertise and Knowledge

This may seem obvious, but not all tutors have the specialized knowledge of math concepts needed to help your child progress in their studies. Make sure the tutor you hire has the appropriate certifications for the math subject to be tutored.

At a minimum, a high school diploma is required to tutor in elementary and middle school math. The tutor should have an undergraduate degree in math, engineering, or science for high school and college.

Passion for Math and Teaching

Just because the tutor has a degree in a mathematical field, it doesn't mean they have a passion for it or teaching. A great tutor understands that each student learns in their own way and can assess the best way to create a lesson plan to increase their strengths and build confidence in understanding and overcoming weaknesses.

Enthusiasm and passion for teaching math give your child the feeling that the tutor is there for them and supports their learning. When a tutor expresses their enjoyment of the subject, it increases a student's confidence.

Reputation

Degrees and certifications only go so far. Research the tutor's reputation in the educational community. If they have a website, take a look around at their reviews and references. They may also have a Facebook page or other social media account. These can be a great way to get to know your tutor before you even have a conversation.

If the tutor is part of a tutoring service, check out the company's website, social media, and ask for referrals. Hearing others' experiences will comfort you in knowing you are choosing the right tutor for your child.

Professionalism and Reliability

Along with a good reputation, any tutor should be professional and reliable. A few questions to ask when considering a tutor are:

  • Will they be transparent with the results generated for previous and current students?
  • Are there parent references and testimonials on their website, or can they be provided on request?
  • Do they appear authentic and genuinely interested in working with your student?
  • Are they readily available to take time for a call with you regarding any issues or concerns you have?

Patience

A math tutor who is patient is also confident in their abilities. Students get overwhelmed with strict deadlines for homework, quizzes, and tests at school. Having a patient tutor helps your child relax and have confidence that they can handle any upcoming task.

Make sure the tutor can break complicated concepts into small, easy to understand parts. An effective tutor doesn't get frustrated when it takes a few times for a student to understand a new or difficult concept. They keep working until the student gains a full understanding and has confidence. An effective tutor can understand when a student is frustrated and encourage them to complete a task. As a parent, you need to know that the tutor won't give up on your child no matter what.

Knowledge of Technology

Your tutor should provide all the information for software, voice call systems, and lesson systems your child needs for tutoring. Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down to work with a tutor and find out that there's a bad connection or a learning system that's hard to navigate. Work with your tutor to do a practice run and ensure all systems work correctly before the first tutoring session.

Invested in Success

Last but not least, choose a tutor who wants to see your child succeed just as much as you do. This quality is a combination of all the qualities in this article. When a tutor is genuinely invested in your child's success, you will see it in their interactions, feedback, and your child's confidence will soar.

How Online Tutoring Works

Picture
COVID-19 has changed the way of life for everyone. Schools have moved to a digital learning environment to benefit public health and safety, in turn creating the worry of students falling behind with new restrictions in place.

Teachers and parents alike want students to continue learning at the same pace as in-person classes. To do so, it’s a great idea to hire a tutor to help your child in a specific subject or for overall learning.

Before the pandemic, students had in-class help from teachers and staff. Unfortunately, moving to an online format, that interaction is limited, as is the time that teachers have to dedicate to items other than the lecture.

Tutoring services have adapted to the digital learning space, offering packages to fit any budget and provide learning opportunities that ensure our children stay up to speed and are able to feel confident in their learning.

4 Common Questions About Online Tutoring

1. How is a Tutoring Program Created?

When you first contact a tutoring service, there are so many questions. For starters, you want to make sure your child's needs are met and that the tutor is the right fit.

After you determine the tutoring service you want to use, an enrollment coordinator calls to answer questions, help you choose an appropriate program, and create a schedule that fits your busy days. Next, the student takes online assessments to provide information to the tutor that helps in creating a lesson plan to meet their needs.

Tutors have access to the same textbooks and information your child uses in school. With this benefit, you have the peace of mind that they are learning at the pace their teacher expects and that the tutor is able to take the time to frame the lessons in ways that may be more beneficial to the student.

2. How do Tutors Communicate with Parents?

The tutor or service contacts you regularly through conferencing, updating you on progress. This way, you can let the teacher know of any struggles and support your child throughout the learning process.

You are also provided with a parent portal for important messages and information regarding your child's progress and updates to their tutoring package.

3. What is the Availability for Online Tutoring?

Because tutoring is online, geographical location is not an issue. Tutors can work with children all over the United States at a time that works for you and your family. As opposed to digital learning through school, a tutor is available anytime their schedule permits, allowing for a little more flexibility in scheduling.

4. What Types of Tutoring Are Available?

There are two categories of learning that a tutoring service uses. They are:

Asynchronous: A category of online tutoring planned for offline courses. Students receive an email with their lesson, complete the assignment, and submit it online. A benefit of Asynchronous online tutoring is that both the tutor and student do need not be online simultaneously for tutoring. This is perfect if a student prefers self-paced learning or if you don't have access to technology capable of playing videos or other real-time online communication.

Synchronous: This category is when the tutor and student are online together. There is a real-time exchange of information and learning during the tutoring session. Synchronous tutoring requires software for audio, video, and text. This is the most common online tutoring method but may also contain the email concept of Asynchronous tutoring.

Benefits of Online Tutoring

Online tutoring provides many benefits. In addition to one-on-one instruction, your child(ren) learn to use technology in a beneficial way, and communication is increased.

1. Online Tutoring is a High-Tech Way to Learn

Today's generation of students has grown up with technology. It's familiar and a comfortable way to interact. In the same way, they use phones, tablets, and computers. Online tutoring provides a familiar and comfortable format for learning.

2. Help Is Convenient When Students Need It

Teachers have limited resources to help an entire class of students learning digitally. Additionally, they may struggle with using technology that is complex or difficult to use.

Using an online tutoring service, students learn in their own home safely and free from distraction. Parents have the added peace of mind that they can closely monitor the tutoring, understanding where their child(ren) struggles, and providing support.

3. Students Receive Focused One-on-One Attention

Students benefit from an individual tutor assigned to them, providing one-on-one learning that they cannot get from a teacher in the digital space. The tutor assesses the student's needs and strengths, tailoring a program to ensure they don't fall behind in any subject.

5 Tips for Not Falling Behind in a World of Distance Learning

12/10/2020

Classroom
During the age of COVID-19, nearly every school started offering online learning to keep kids safe and avoid unnecessary risks of contracting the virus. While online learning is safer for your kids, it also puts a lot of additional stress on parents, students, and teachers.

With all these factors considered, it's normal to fear that your kids will fall behind in school. The learning environment is definitely different, and it’s more challenging for some than it is for others.

There are a few things you can do to help your child stay ahead while learning online. Here are a few tips to help keep your kid on track and alleviate the stress distance learning can cause.

1. Create a Personal Organization Method

Even when we try to organize things neatly and efficiently, there are still unforeseen issues that pop up and throw us off. Plus, not every organization method works for everyone.

In fact, each of your child’s teachers is probably using their own unique organization method for coursework and announcements — making it even harder for you to figure out what your child needs to do.

If you come up with your own method, you can take information from each classroom and build a cohesive and easy-to-follow schedule for your child.

Write it down

It may seem silly, but writing down a to-do list for yourself helps you remember the order in which things need to be done. Having a written list clears the clutter in your mind and allows you to focus on productivity throughout the day.

Keep a calendar

How many times have you asked your child what they have for schoolwork that day and gotten an "I dunno" answer? Digital learning platforms have a calendar or schedule listed, sit down with your child, and go through the upcoming lessons and tasks. Grab out your calendar and write when reading, assignments, and tests are due.

You can even get your child involved by offering incentives (movie or game night!) when they complete their work. This not only takes stress off you, but there's an added benefit of teaching your kid organization skills as well!

Break it down

Even with a to-do list and a calendar, you or your kid may still feel overwhelmed. When this happens, take each task and break it down into smaller chunks. If you can, give your kid a break between subjects, or split the assignment and quiz with a moment to stand and stretch.

2. Have a Designated Workspace

One of the most important things to help keep your kids on track during digital learning is to have a workspace just for them. While the couch or bed may be comfy, distractions abound in these locations. Find a corner in a room, set up a desk and chair. Make it more inviting by letting your child put drawings or pictures on the wall.
The more inviting the space, the more your child will want to spend time in it. This space keeps distractions to a minimum and allows children to focus on the task at hand, lessening the potential for falling behind during digital learning.

3. Communicate with Teachers

Not only are kids learning at a distance, but you are also distanced from their teachers. Keeping the lines of communication open with your child's teachers helps prevent any issues of falling behind in class.

When you discuss any roadblocks or difficulties with learning, your teacher can provide resources to help. Extra assignments for practice, tutoring resources, and additional one-on-one time are a few of the ways a teacher will help

4. Hire a Tutor

It's important to avoid burnout from helping your child with their schoolwork constantly or trying to tackle subjects that aren't your forte. Filling the learning gaps when a teacher isn't available is exhausting and frustrating for both you and your child. The most common subjects a parent and a child struggle with are math and English. These are core subjects from which all other subjects are built.

Your child's teacher should have some tutoring resources, but there are tutoring agencies in your area to choose from. Traditional tutoring is done in-person, but with the shift to digital learning, most tutors are also choosing a digital route.

When selecting a tutor, look for suggestions from other parents, the child's teacher, or call a local agency. Make sure you have a phone consultation with them and explain the issues and struggles you're experiencing. Most agencies have multiple tutors for specific subjects and grades, whereas an individual tutor usually does traditional tutoring in one subject.

5. Set Yourself Up for Success

Once you have your organization, workspace, and communication set up, Mighty B Learning completes the learning picture. Adding tutoring into your digital learning plan ensures that your child gets help where they need it and prevents them from falling behind.
